For adults, less than you have been told. The largest review of the adult literature found a small but consistent advantage for memory, particularly delayed recall, and results that were largely equivocal for attention and executive function. So the answer to whether breakfast improves concentration is that the memory finding is reasonably solid, the concentration finding is not, and most of the confident advice you have heard is borrowed from research on children.
This is one of those cases where the strength of a health claim and the strength of its evidence have drifted apart over about thirty years of repetition. Worth pulling back apart, particularly if you have ever felt vaguely guilty for starting work on coffee alone.
What the adult evidence actually shows

The reference point is a 2016 review in Advances in Nutrition by Galioto and Spitznagel, which pulled together 38 studies on the acute cognitive effects of breakfast in adults, plus 16 on breakfast composition. Its summary is more careful than the way it usually gets cited: a small advantage for memory, especially delayed recall, seen across the majority of a large number of studies, and less clear potential benefits for attention and executive function, which tended to come out either equivocal or positive. It also found no effects on language.
Two things follow. The memory result is the real one, and it is described as small. And “concentration”, which is what most people mean when they ask this question, sits in the equivocal column rather than the supported one.
One more thing you should know before weighing that review, because it affects how much confidence to place in it: the work was supported by the Kellogg Company, a breakfast cereal manufacturer. The authors themselves declared no conflicts of interest, and a funding source is not an argument against a finding. But it is the sort of detail a reader is entitled to have when the finding happens to favour eating breakfast, and it is a reason to weight the review’s hedges at least as heavily as its headline.
Where the strong evidence actually lives
The confident version of the breakfast claim comes from research on children, and it is stronger there. A companion review in the same journal found that breakfast consumption relative to fasting has a short-term, same-morning, domain-specific effect on cognition, with attention, executive function and memory facilitated more reliably by breakfast than by fasting, and effects more apparent in undernourished children.
That last clause matters more than anything else in this article. The population where breakfast most reliably improves cognitive performance is undernourished children. Generalising that to a well-fed adult with a desk job is a leap, and it is the leap that most breakfast advice quietly makes.
What about what you eat, not whether you eat

The composition question turns out to be weaker still.
A 2022 meta-analysis on glycaemic load, the measure combining how fast a carbohydrate raises blood glucose with how much of it there is, found no effect of breakfast glycaemic load on speed of attention, accuracy of attention, or accuracy of working memory across any of the three post-meal time windows it examined. The authors read this as the effect being specific to particular subdomains rather than general, and they note fewer studies assessed working memory than episodic memory, so the picture is uneven rather than settled.
Which is to say the popular framing, that the right breakfast stabilises your blood sugar and therefore your focus, is not supported by the attention data.
The fasted-morning question

There is one more angle relevant to anyone who trains before work or simply does not eat until midday.
A 2025 systematic review in BMC Psychology asked whether eating breakfast changes how exercise affects cognition. It found no indication that the effects of exercise on cognitive performance, things like processing speed and inhibitory control, are altered by breakfast skipping or consumption, or by the macronutrients and contents of the breakfast. Its own practical note is unusually direct: for healthy office workers who walk or cycle to the office but do not have time for breakfast, omitting it may not acutely compromise their subsequent work performance within the first two hours.
The caveats are large and the authors state them. Five studies. Seventy participants in total, aged 18 to 50. A mean methodological quality score they describe as fair. Results extending only to about two hours after exercise. And explicitly not applicable to people with metabolic disease or other medical conditions.
That is a narrow finding, and it is worth reading as “the panic is unwarranted” rather than “skipping is better”.
A boundary worth naming
Nothing here is a recommendation to skip meals, and none of these studies looked at what happens to your energy, mood or eating patterns over weeks rather than hours. They measured short-term performance on laboratory tasks in healthy adults, which is a narrow slice of why eating matters.
If you are making decisions about meal timing in the context of blood sugar problems, diabetes, pregnancy, medication that needs food, an eating disorder, or any ongoing condition, this literature is not the right input and a doctor or registered dietitian is. If your relationship with eating feels difficult rather than merely inconvenient, that is worth raising with a clinician regardless of what any performance study says.

Why is the advice so confident if the evidence is not?
Largely because the strong findings come from a different population. The interesting thing about this literature is not that breakfast does nothing. It is how much smaller the real finding is than the claim built on top of it, and how much of the confidence was imported from studies of undernourished children.
Plenty of good reasons to eat in the morning remain untouched by any of this. You might be hungry. You might get irritable without it. You might find that eating at consistent times makes the rest of your day easier to organise. Those are legitimate and none of them require a cognitive-performance justification.
What the evidence does not support is treating breakfast as a focus intervention, or feeling that you have sabotaged your morning by missing it. If concentration is the thing you are actually trying to fix, the breakfast literature is a thin place to look for leverage, and the afternoon dip has a clearer explanation than the morning one.
